Host: Good afternoon listeners, thanks for tuning in to 4KB. Jane Lewis is with us from Tourism Queensland to tell us about the annual Queensland Festival. Jane, welcome.
Jane: Morning John. So much is going on for the next couple of weeks in our festival here in the state’s capital of Brisbane. The Music Tent opens this week, and this will be an event not to be missed. As the name suggests, the Music Tent is an enormous tent where musical performances and activities will be going on throughout the day for the next two weeks.
Monday is going to be really busy as it’s a public holiday and the first day of the event. It’s going to be lots of fun, but (Q11) if you’re free, it’s probably a better option to leave it till Tuesday unless you love crowds. The following day is when the master classes take place, and this requires pre-registration, so you can’t just turn up, I’m afraid. The weekend educational workshops were so popular last year that they have been extended this year. (Q12) They now run each afternoon from 1:00 till 4:00, before the evening performances start from 5:00. If you’re learning to play an instrument, these workshops are great fun, so make sure you get along there.
Tickets for the Music Tent events are available from the door, or you can purchase them at the ticket office located in the city centre. For the best deal, though, take proof of your home address to any library. (Q13) As a local resident, you will be able to purchase discounted tickets.
Apart from music, we’ll also be celebrating our local history with a special walking tour around Brisbane’s city centre. Not to be missed on the walk is a tour of Macquarie House, the home of Queensland’s first governor. It has lovely gardens you can walk around or picnic in. (Q14) This building has a fascinating history because it was built on the very same spot where the first settlers landed, so it’s really worth a visit if you enjoy learning about our local history.
No Australian event is complete without a Barbie, and I think the big barbecue is going to be fantastic. It’s not quite as big as the Millennium Year barbecue, but (Q15) there’ll be local and international bands playing on the main stage for the first time this year at no extra cost. As always, the food will be prepared by top local chefs—my mouth is watering already!
I really recommend going along to the Railway Museum during the festival because trains are such an important part of Queensland’s history. On loan from Queensland Rail at the moment is our very first steam train. You won’t be able to see it in operation, but (Q16) you can hop on board and have a meal in the old dining carriage. There is also a wonderful display of uniforms that have been worn over the last 100 years.
Narrator: Now listen and answer questions 17 to 20.
Jane: Another really special opportunity is a return trip on our only remaining steam train, which runs from Ipswich to Toowoomba. (Q17-18) If you purchase a family ticket, as well as a trip on the train, you receive a free Australian flag each to wave while aboard.
There is a small charge for the Ipswich Museum tour, but I think it’s worth it as it makes an educational day out. The documentary film you can see there is interesting, and it’s well worth the two-dollar entry fee. (Q17-18) On the return train journey, the kids get a lovely activity book designed to teach them about the history of the steam train. Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen and hats—it’s going to be hot up there in Toowoomba at this time of year!
And finally, I’m going to tell you about an event called “Our Favourite Place”. This is an opportunity for the public to vote for their favourite spot anywhere in the state—maybe a park or a restaurant, it’s up to you. (Q19-20) You can vote even if you’re not living in the area at the moment. You can vote as often as you like by sending in the voting form, or if you prefer, send a text message from any Australian mobile phone number with the name of the location. It’s so easy! Not much time left, though, so get those votes in as soon as possible. The winning location will be announced on the last Saturday of the festival. (Q19-20) Also, remember that no age limit applies for this one, so this is a great way to get the whole family involved.

Professor: Hello, Pam, Jason. Thanks for coming to discuss your marketing project. I’ve read your proposal and outline, so let’s go over it, okay?
Jason: Right.
Professor: You’ve chosen the topic of food packaging. So, what did you want to get out of doing this project?
Pam: (Q21) We decided if we did our project on packaging, we might find some practical tips on how a business could make more money. After all, we’re Business Admin students, and that’s the ultimate reason we’re on the course, isn’t it?
Jason: So, although we know the impact of packaging on the environment is important, we feel the government regulations are pretty strict already in that area.
Professor: Okay. Now, you’ve decided to look specifically at the packaging of food. What do you think the main issue is for shoppers these days?
Jason: Some people get upset about the waste with all the plastic and stuff used to package food, but I guess most don’t pay much attention to that.
Pam: A few years ago, people seemed concerned about packaging food so that buyers knew more about what it contains, from labels like calories, additives, and stuff. (Q22) But in the current economic climate, Jason and I think people are most interested in packaging that helps keep food fresh for longer.
Professor: And you’ve chosen to concentrate on big supermarket chains. Why not look at local stores or even convenience stores?
Jason: Well, there are some interesting published studies based on small retail outlets, and we looked at those. (Q23) But after a little investigation, we found that the managers of the large supermarkets in this area wanted to be helpful and are willing to let us talk to them and their employees.
Pam: Of course, the supermarkets do account for most food sales around here, but that wasn’t our reason for choosing them.
Professor: Speaking of this area, you know, the food buying choices here are quite unusual. Since we’re in a university town, the population is quite young.
Jason: But actually, my research shows that age isn’t the factor in making the area unique. And although the education level is pretty high, that doesn’t seem very important either.
Pam: (Q24) I guess it’s because we’ve got people from all over the world living here with all the foreign students at university.
Professor: That’s it. Our supermarkets cater for a huge diversity of cultures.
Jason: In our survey of the literature, I was struck by what shoppers say is most important to them when they buy. I would have thought how much the buyer had to pay would be the key, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Pam: That’s right. (Q25) How delicious the buyer considers the product seems to be the main thing. Whether or not the food is good for you is pretty low down on the customer’s priorities.
Professor: That’s interesting.

Professor: Let’s discuss the practical experiment you’re planning. You’re going to design the box for a new breakfast cereal, which you’ll try to market… Let’s talk through the experiment.
Jason: Okay, that would be helpful.
Professor: Now, the number of different designs you’re proposing to show each student is two. (Q26) If I were you, I’d make it at least four. That way you can examine their reaction to more variety in the kinds of packaging.
Pam: Okay, good idea. We do have several more designs.
Jason: Now we’ve got a sample from our class of about 20. Is that enough?
Professor: Probably not. (Q27) Try talking to the assistant in the Business Studies department; he can sort out how to recruit some more from other classes for you.
Pam: Right.
Professor: Now, as to how you’re going to display your packages to the students. I did talk about those technical issues in one of your first classes. (Q28) Go back and look over what I said about the practical realities of conducting experiments.
Jason: Okay, we can do that.
Pam: We are going to ask each student to choose the one design they think is best, but how will we know why they chose that one?
Professor: Well, don’t just rely on oral prompts. (Q29) Give them a series of written questions. That way you’ll have hard data.
Jason: Okay. But what about analyzing the data?
Professor: Well, we’ve got an excellent computer program to gather it all together, but we still need to interpret it ourselves.
Pam: (Q30) So we’ll need to give ourselves a few more days for that.
Professor: Yes, we will. Anyway, it’s all looking good now.
